Electronic Cigarettes Vs. Tobacco
Most people tell you they would quit smoking tobacco if they had the will power but don't believe them.
They need their fix. They crave that little slender tube between their fingers for daily support and the brief surcease from life that comes with that first morning drag on a cigarette. And so the dilemma rages on.
Well fortunately now there is a remedy for this; and it's called the Electronic Cigarette. If you've never heard of an electronic cigarette you're not alone. I live in a smaller town on the East Coast and most people look at me like I have two heads when I try explaining what an electronic (or electric) cigarette is - and although there are days that I feel like I have two heads, I really don't.
So what is it?
An alternative to smoked tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, electronic cigarettes are smokeless; they instead produce a vapor. In addition to nicotine delivery, this vapor also provides a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke. However, NO tobacco, smoke, or combustion is actually involved in the operation of an electric (electronic) cigarette.
An electronic or electric cigarette is usually shaped like an elongated tube. The long part of the tube is a rechargeable battery. The shorter part, or the "butt", is a disposable or refillable cartridge, where the nicotine is held in liquid form until it is super heated by the battery as you "drag" on the cigarette. The liquid is then turned into a vapor which the user inhales and expels just like a regular cigarette smoker would.
Most electronic cigarettes have been designed to resemble real smoking products, like cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Another common design is the "pen-style", named for it's resemblance to a ballpoint pen. Most electronic cigarettes are reusable devices with replaceable and refillable parts. A number of disposable electronic cigarettes exist as well. More and more brands of electronic cigarettes are popping up on the market everyday.
The best thing about electronic cigarettes is that they don't smell bad. In fact, some of them do not smell at all. And if they do, it's a pleasant aroma, not the stifling smell of a lit cigarette. What you are smelling or inhaling from anelectronic cigarette is actually not smoke but a vapor. There is No tar in and electronic cigarette , just nicotine. Or, you may opt for a nicotine-free cartridge, or specify the mg. of nicotine based on what strength you prefer. Nifty! The options are are all there. The only thing you are sacrificing are the poisons and tar, and you will be saving alot of money as well.
Consider this:
Depending where you live, the cost of a pack of cigarettes averages around $4.50 to $5, including taxes. Using the lower number, a pack-a-day smoker burns through about $31.50 per week, or $1,638 per year. That's a house payment or a nice vacation. Further doing the math shows that a 40-year-old who quits smoking and puts the savings into a 401(k) earning 9% a year would have nearly $250,000 by age 70. OneElectronic Cigarette cartridge averages $2.00 a piece and can last up to a week or more!
The second thing I like, but probably the number one most important fact, is that electronic cigarettes do not contain all of the cancer causing agents that are relative to tobacco products.

If you read through the list, most of the ingredients are commonly known, perfectly safe and included in a lot of the dietary devices we digest regularly. Now, Propylene Glycol is a different story. But thankfully it sounds more harmful than it is. In fact, it is an FDA approved food additive, so don't be discouraged by the mention of it. Propylene glycol, also called 1,2-propanediol or propane-1,2-diol, is an organic compound (a diol or double alcohol) with formula C3H8O2 or HO-CH2-CHOH-CH3 which is a colorless, mostly odorless, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste. It's used in toothpaste, foods, and many other ingestible products.
So there you have it. I have never been a smoker of tobacco, aside from second-hand smoke, but I do occasionally like to take a few "vapes" from the aforementionedelectronic cigarette. Apart from the debate about the differences between tobacco and an electronic cigarette , comes the FDA battle and debate over regulations and "safety". (As if tobacco was ever safe!) But we'll follow up with that another time.
